Attorney Stanislav Markelov murdered

RUSSIA, Moscow. In Moscow, on January 19, attorney Stanislav Markelov was gunned down, reported Radio Freedom. Markelov was representing the interests of the Kungaev family in court. Their daughter, Elza Kungaeva, was a Chechen girl killed by former Russian army Colonel Yuri Budanov.

Budanov was sentenced to 10 years for the murder. Recently he received early parole.

Markelov was killed after a press conference at which he reported that he intended to appeal Budanov’s early parole to the Ulyanovsk Regional Court.

Stanislav Markelov was also representing the interests of the relatives of Zelimkhana Murdalova, who was killed by OMON paramilitary officer Lapin, nicknamed “Cadet”.
