Who led the riots Riga?
The majority of participants in the riots which occurred on Tuesday in Riga were members of the National-Bolshevik party (NBP) of Edward Limonov, a party forbidden in Russia. They were the instigators who turned a peaceful meeting of the opposition into a genuine riot, according to the Internet site “Konturi”.

Material published on the site comes from the Internet diary of a participant in the disorder, Vladimir Abel Linderman, one of the leaders of the NBP.

“People were not gathered in order to listen to choral singing and dull speeches. If a daring group of persons, I thought, called on the others to take action, then some of the people would surely go. We found this group of people. Immediately after the end of the meeting, approximately one-and-a-half thousand people marched to the Parliament. The National Bolsheviks led the way, acknowledged the party leader.

“Konturi” reminded readers that in 2001, the NBP management hoped for aid from Russian intelligence agencies in its activity aimed at the destabilization of the situation in Kazakhstan with its work among the Russian-language population in the northern regions of this country. “In Kazakhstan, since 1997, I have dealt with the organization of the independent Russian political movement. It is founded on structures of the NBP. I am convinced that the political resources of the suppressed Russian population in the countries of the former USSR can become an enormous force, on which Vladimir Putin can depend”, declared Limonov from the pages of Kommersant on May 11, 2001.

Meanwhile the chief of the state police of Latvia, Aldis Lielyuksis, has stated that the riots were planned previously, since incendiary bottles and paint packets were found on detainees.

“Konturi” also examined the question of ties between leaders of the NBP and the FSB of the Russian Federation and the possible participation of Russian intelligence agencies in the riots in Latvia.
