Actor punished for satirising militia
Members of the state traffic inspectorate have beaten an actor of the Kiev theatre Mamadu, Vasily Bendas, and his friend Oleg Lutsenko, the chairman of a children's sports and technical club called Formula CC. Vasily has been an invalid since childhood and is only four foot ten inches tall. However, in the official report, the actor is reported to have “offered resistance” to fully-grown policemen.

Bendas played in a TV serial called Private Militia. His comic role was that of a son of a stupid militia sergeant Petrenko. In the series, the police inspectors were derided as bribe takers. In addition Vasily has played in a popular Ukrainian comedy called Show of Weevils.

Several days ago in Kiev, at around 11 p.m. Vasily Bendas was taking Oleg Lutsenko home in his old BMW. He stopped to park on Balzac street. At this time a car from the traffic inspectorate (GAI) approached and two inspectors with truncheons jumped out. They proceeded to handcuff Lutsenko and without any explanation started to beat him. In addition they used their truncheons on the BMW, damaging the bonnet and doors.

The Mamadu theatre actor then began to shame the traffic inspectors, and closed ranks with Lutsenko. The GAI officers told the actor: “We know of you, the clown. You sneered at the militia on TV. Now we shall ruin you, ugly creature!”

Vasily stoically took the insults. The GAI militiamen saw that the arrested men were in a sober state, and therefore did not breathalyse them. Having searched their motor vehicle and not finding any suspicious objects, the GAI officers took the two men to Desnyansk police station in Kiev.

In the morning the GAI militiamen took them to the courtroom. Overlooking the forged report, the sleepy judge took the decision to “fine citizens Bendas and Lutsenko 27 dollars each for resisting the militia”. The arrestees were given no time to present their side in defence.

The examination fixed on Vasily's bruises and grazes on his body. Having learned that the actor would defend his rights, the GAI officers asked some tramps to be witnesses in the trial. The tramps declared the actor “showed resistance to the inspectors” and “beat his head against the bonnet and doors”. He then beat his head on other cars. Thus did bruises appear.

But the examination did not find any marks on the actor’s head, but in the area of his kidneys and liver. The victim has submitted a statement to the Public Prosecutor’s office. However, an employee of the Kiev traffic inspectorate, Eugeny Kravets, suddenly recalled that Vasily had participated in actions of the GAI. “ We will understand why our workers stopped comrade Bendas’s car”, Kravets assured.
