Report from a Belarus electoral district
In all Minsk electoral constituencies a poster is on display: a dark blue background, and in front a hand holding a glass ball. Some posters have just one hand underneath the ball: others have another hand on top of it. Inside the ball are the contours of the country’s borders enclosing the national colours of Belarus. Above and below are the words Stability, Referendum, and Pro Belarus. This is 16 October: the last day of campaigning before the referendum and elections.
“And what actually does this creation mean?” – I ask a young member of the militia. He smiles and answers, “No idea”. Full Story...

Announcement to the Chechen people

Terror and children
On this photograph are not the children who have died in Beslan. On this photograph are bodies of the Chechen children who died by the hand of the Russian army in autumn 1999. Their deaths did not warrant the call-up of the UN Security Council, and Dr. Roshal did not rush to the scene of the tragedy with water and medicines to try and persuade terrorists to spare children’s lives. They were Chechen children, and Russia did not shudder at the horror of the crime it committed. It simply did not notice. Full Story...
Return to the past
27 August 2004, Russian justice ministry refused to renew the registration of Independent Psychiatric Association of Russia (IPA), member of World Psychiatric Association since 1989. IPA is a professional human rights organisation who in the 15 years of its existence has played a prominent role in gaining international recognition for the Russian psychiatry, defending the rights of the mentally ill, establishing a competitive psychiatric examination in the country; it opposed the use psychiatry for non-medical purposes, namely to close down religious organisations disfavoured by the authorities. Full Story...
Caucasian Domino
During the war in Vietnam, when many in the USA already understood the senselessness of the continued presence of the American army in that country, the president, backed by the military, insisted on the war’s continuation. The generals argued that if Vietnam fell, according to the domino principle, the communists would automatically swallow up all of Indochina. Full Story...
Guiding principles through time: all ways lead to Ginsburg
The question concerning the existence of political opposition in Russia can be considered as answered. And without sociological computations, everything is sufficiently transparent: what we term “opposition” complacently surrenders its position. Here, as everywhere, “stability” and “order” rule… Full Story...
What have we forgotten in South Ossetia?
It is surprising that Russia, having such a long and heavy experience of conquering neighbouring peoples, should look with such maniacal persistence for new adventures in the northern part of the Caucasus. It is possible to imagine that the country has an excess of money, arms, and recruits. However, for one party lies ahead death and destruction: for another the reward of profit. Full Story...
