The results of the election for the new Russian Parliament are in the main clear. Commentators have not stinted on shocking assessments of the new political order: a return to the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, a set back for democracy, a one and a half party system etc. Who would argue that this is not the case, if only it had sunk in before. But it is still not too late. Full Story... Skinheads go to extremes while police remain silent
On 12 November at four o’clock in the afternoon about fifty skinheads entered a compartment of a suburban Moscow train on the Kuskovo – Karacharovo route. They brutally beat up three people in the compartment, probably Azerbaijanis. They broke the window and possibly threw one of the Caucasians out. The crowd of skinheads consisted of teenagers between the ages of 14-16, accompanied by several adults who did not take part in the attack. The reader (even in Russia) is more or less familiar with the position of ‘the moderates’ represented by former Deputy Prime Minister Akhmad Zakaev or Foreign Minister Ilias Akhmadov. However, the position of ‘the intransigent’ is much less known about. In the meantime, they have considerable influence in resolving the issues of war and peace in today’s Russian-Chechen conflict.
Andrey Smirnov, independent Russian journalist, managed to meet in Chechnya with amir Ramzan, the commander of one of Chechen Jama’ats operating against Russian forces in North Caucuses, and interview him. Full Story... Paralysis of will
The Kremlin’s war with the freedom-loving sections of Russian society has gathered pace. The general opinion of liberal minded people is that this confrontation is becoming tougher and tougher. It is right to say that the authorities in Russia have never been predisposed towards intellectuals and entrepreneurs, preferring to count on obedient civil servants and dependable generals. However during various periods of history those in power have nevertheless behaved in different ways. Full Story...The Last Window to the World Closes in Turkmenistan
Published last week in all the Turkmen newspapers, the impending Law on Public Associations became the impetus for provincial courts to issue complaints regarding the liquidation of non-government organisations. The haste with which lawyers got down to business, thus violating the present law, once more proves that NGOs have long been a bone in the throat both for The Leader of All Turkmen and for his beaurocratic staff. Not waiting for the Law to come into effect, the courts are already notifying the public organisations about their immediate liquidation. Cuba. Journalist Bernado Rogelio Arevalo in his interview on 18 November with the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ) told of the torture and humiliation which he was subjected to in prison. Last week he was freed following six years of imprisonment for “disrespect towards Fidel Castro”. Full Story...The Russian goddess of Justice is deaf
The most distinguishing feature of the Russian justice system is its deafness. The Russian goddess of Liberty, Femida, should be depicted not with a blindfold over her eyes, but with noise excluders over her ears. Here is a typical scenario: you are pleading a clearly expressed law, not one which requires arbitrary explanation. Neither the judge, nor the procurator disagrees with you, but they give the impression that they have heard neither the legal position, nor your own conclusions. There are no former Chekists – state security employees like to say, and Chekists remain Chekists all their lives. It is not a profession or a place of service, but a calling, a lifestyle and a mentality. Therefore a Chekist who suddenly joins the category of “former” becomes “enemy number one” for the whole corporation and punishment will not be long in waiting if only they can reach him. Full Story... The FSB’s «favourite enemy»
It can happen that a person meets misfortune all through his life. Such is fate. For sure, one can sympathise. But it may happen that the role of deciding an individual’s destiny falls to some state organisation, which somehow sees its raison d’être as being to spoil the life of a person, chosen by such an organisation to play the part of its enemy. In the life of the Chechen Abdullah Erzanukayev, the organisation in question is the powerful Russian Special Service FSB.
